The bulk shot should be approx. 2ft. from the hook, the optional stop shot is an additional small shot that can be positioned to give a reasonable casting length, the float then has a shorter distance to travel to the stop knot.
The slider is a much under rated method and is mainly used in waters where the depth is greater than the length of the rod.
There are other advantages that are often overlooked.
Casting is easier in almost any of the deeper waters, anything over half the length of the rod.
Casting under overhanging trees is much easier, you can even get away with under arm casting.
Steep banks are another situation where it is easier with a slider.
Fishing at long distance it gives us a better a better striking ability, especially in the deeper swims.
What constitutes a slider - there are many variations but only two that I would recommend.
A Bodied Waggler capable of taking some heavy shot and having a very small eye at the bottom.
Pops Tip :-
A simple alternative is to use a small link swivel making sure that the eye is small enough for the stop knot not to pull through, you can then use any decent sized waggler by linking to it.
A good sized Balsa with two eyes set at right angles to the float body. One at the bottom and the other in line and at the top of the main body of the float.
Ideal for running through the swim dragging the bait along the bottom.
It is not suitable for holding back.
The stop knot used by both types of float is made up from a piece of 2 lb line, anything heavier will catch on the end runner.
Fold the knot line in two, creating a loop.
Hold the looped end and the reel line together.
With the other hand take one of the knot lines loose ends.
From just below the loop and working back towards the other loose end wrap it around both lines several times.
Take the same end and lay it back over the wraps and through the loop.
Take each end of the knot line and pull apart tightening the knot until it is just possible to slide it along the reel line.
Trim the stop knot making sure to leave each end NO SHORTER THAN 4 cm. or it will also catch on the end runner.
